Git allows you to tag a specific version of your project. One use for this would be milestones -- version 0.9, version 1.0, etc. Git also allows you to branch off from your main project to try some experiment, or add new features to your program in a way that the main branch stays untouched.

Git is a distributed version control system. So, if you are working with others on a project you will need to sync your various versions. Even if you are working alone on a project, you will likely want to keep a copy on github (or bitbucket) or your company server, so that you can get fresh copy no matter what computer you are working on.
